TIPS FOR ENRICHING teaching and LEARNING

Even if an ‘ideal’ teacher wants to do good work there are practical problems and limitations. Time, timetable, mutual non-interference among teachers, exam pattern, administrators’ restrictions, callous or over-zealous parents,  ‘class’ of students and their environment, too small or too crowded classes , mediocrity oriented syllabus, curriculum, books and edu dept -  all these and many others can be quoted as to why we as teachers  are producing  mediocre students –

These tips may help a sincere teacher to do something in the existing situation.

1.     If you are dictating or writing Q &A , TRY TO – [a]  explain what the question means    [b]  say the meaning of the answer you have given  [c]  yourself show or ask one ‘bright’ student to show   where in the book the answer could be found.

2.     Keep in the class room [or just display and take away]   maps and charts from the school stock. These can be chosen and changed periodically depending on the lesson or subject being taught in the class

3.     Make sure even the; dullest’ student’s notebook is complete. Make a system of submitting and correcting notebooks. See that the earlier mistakes indicated by you are understood by the student. Insist on correct version to be resubmitted.

4.     Take the same Q AND A [1 above] and ask the same in  different ways. Simple e.g. what is a triangle?  0r a triangle has -------  -------- [fill up]    or   how many sides/ angles does a triangle have? -------- Another e.g empire x was established by a and b  is the answer. Qns can be – who established empire x?  Or by whom the empire  x was established?  Or   a and b are famous for what?  etc.

5.     In any reading use drama techniques. Encourage students also to do likewise. E.g. a question mark [at the end of a sentence] deserves a special tone. Acceptable and universal body language is also ok. e.g big, small , strong etc.

6.     Word- meaning [i.e. what the given word means in the ordinary usage of the language] is very important in ‘core’ subjects [viz. m, sc, soc] . Please find from persons, dictionaries etc. Any special meaning or definitions must be pointed out.

7.     In core subjects any formulas, notations, short forms etc can be expanded. To do this you may need the English equivalent of the terms. Please find them and tell the students. 5th std and above can and will,  understand and appreciate the extra ability. e.g.  co-2  is carbon dioxide,   f=m*a  where m is mass etc ,   SWOT  analysis where S is  strength etc. ,   RBI is reserve bank of India,  B.C.E is before Common  era etc

8.     If HM allows, get out of the classroom at least once a week – this can be a different method of teaching, activity, outing etc. If no imagination on your part, get to a shade under a tree and conduct one period without a black board [if rain or sun, you can go to a lab or common hall or veranda or nearby park or vacant site ……]

-        Hope you ‘ideal’ teachers got some ‘ideas’. Improve upon these and let your colleagues know. I’ll be happy to get info from you and friends]
